Paul Jeffrey, author of Collegiate Churches of England and Wales, explained the function of the colleges, collectives of priests who prayed for the souls of their founder’s family. Many buildings were destroyed in the 16th century but some vestiges survive in Kent and Leslie Smith showed slides of these and the tombs of their founders. |
Bishop Michael Turnbull then conducted the business meeting and afterwards Alan Holland gave an excellent talk about the church. The adjoining College is now in use as Almshouses and when members walked across the cloister to tea in the lovely refectory they were treated to a quarter peal from the Cobham ringers. Tea was then served by the ladies of the College. |
